Dead Hedges - photos by Kay Brown, 26 April 2024
Walking around the country park you can see lots of new dead hedges being created. Where the park rangers and volunteers have cleared young trees and scrub they have used the resulting brush wood to form hedges alongside paths and further back into the woods natural windbreaks. These will provide year-round habitat for invertebrates, birds and small mammals. They also create micro-climate areas where they protect plants and animals from the worst of the weather. Over time they collect dead leaves which are blown into the branches and soon living plants colonise to turn the hedge into a living barrier within the woodland.
