BESTWOOD BRICK WORKS

As with so many other coal mines in the local area, Bestwood had its own brickworks. It was located on the eastern side of Moor Road, between the entrances to West House Farm and Goosedale Farm, as shown on the 1893 O.S. map below. The enterprise appears to have been short-lived, linked to the building phase of the colliery and the associated housing in Bestwood Village. Sadly the next O.S. map, dated 1903, simply identifies the location as an unlabelled field.

An example brick from the Bestwood Coal & Iron Company Limited (B.C.I. Coy Limited) is displayed set in the wall of the restored Bestwood Winding Engine House.
