A miner’s safety helmet was an essential piece of kit and served to protect miner’s heads from falling debris, machinery and other hazards when working underground. The brim of the hat would protect the eyes. At first headgear was made of cloth, then compacted cardboard and later, hard plastic.
From 1850 until around 1915, miner’s headgear generally consisted of cloth or canvas hats with leather brims and metal lamp brackets on the forehead that allowed them to hang a source of light on the front of their cap. |
