Frosty Neighbours - 30 December 2014

The frost that came along after the first snowfall was just as magical. Below Julie Sutton captured some of the crystal coat covering our neighbouring park around Newstead Abbey.
Ice crystals cover the underlying snow.
Everything is covered in a frosty fringe
Yew tree transformed
Even the dreaded Rhododendron looks beautiful
Sun on snow is always a winning combination
It looks tropical with that sky but don't leave your thermals off just yet.
A few baubles and this would be a very trendy Christmas tree
He doesn't look happy to be left out in the cold!

Snow fell on Dec 26 and stayed around for about 5 days.
Everything was covered with a sparkling winter blanket
It meant lots of extra fun in the park for everyone.
Sledging makes everyone smile.
Meeting the ponies from Broad Valley Stables
Entering the Mill Lakes
Lots of wild fowl gathered on the lakes
Frost is off the trees but snow still thick on the ground
Inviting paths in the snow around the lakes
Far side of the lakes amongst the trees
Bottom end of the lakes as the River Leen leaves the park
Heritage amongst the snow
Ponies in the fields adjacent to the main park
A peek at the view over the hedge
Great view over the fields to the park
View from the park back down into the village

Peas On Earth - Thursday 11 December 2014

A Christmas party arranged to say thank you to all the park volunteers for their help throughout the year.
Sue and her little helper welcome everyone to the party.
The room was dressed and the Christmas tree loaded with gifts.
Coats were whisked away as you arrived.
The tables began to fill up and the chatter got underway
Everyone was poised for the big event.
The WI café volunteers were well represented.
Park Monday Volunteers were there in numbers too.
The Voles were gathering!
The Winding Engine House volunteers talking shop
The kitchen staff were ready to get the food out in good time.
The stars of the show - Pies!
Some of the puddings.
Not much tiramisu trifle survived.
The trusty soup kettle was brought into service on the non-alcoholic mulled wine.
We drank the mulled wine almost to the bottom of the pan.
Lots of time to catch up on the park gossip.
Everyone full to bursting and ready for the quiz
How many eyes does a spider have...?
The WI table planning the next café shift's baking and soup making.
Clair with the fair hair!
Last coffee before the big clear up and then time to go home.

Bestwood in Bloom - Sunday 23 March 2014 & Saturday 5 April

Back in October on a damp volunteers' day hundreds of daffodil bulbs were planted in the park on a grass bank by the Bestwood Lodge Hotel car park. Now in spring they are making the entrance to the park very inviting. Go along to see them whilst they are at their best. No picking them though!
