Item 2 - Mining Shovel

The traditional technique for extracting coal depended entirely on muscle power. Miners chopped out coal with picks and then shovelled it into waiting coal tubs.

It was hard, dirty and dangerous work. Later as coal mining became more mechanised, machinery did this sort of work.
