The Main Country Park
The main area of the Bestwood Country Park lies between the B686 Papplewick road and the A60 Nottingham – Mansfield road. It is the home of the Bestwood Colliery Winding Engine House , the Dynamo House and Alexandra Lodge.
The park has been a royal hunting ground for centuries. It was the location of Richard III's last few days of sport before the Battle of Bosworth and the meeting place for the assignations of Charles II & Nell Gwyn. In more recent times it has housed Bestwood Colliery, the first pit to produce 1 million tons of coal in a 12 month period. Now it contains the remains of the colliery's Winding Engine House, the Dynamo House (now a community café) and acres of wonderful wildlife habitat.
You can explore on foot, cycle or horseback (restricted trails). There is no entrance fee and the car park (small but beautifully formed) is also free. There are free paper maps available in the Dynamo House when open or information boards and static maps throughout the park. The pit tips - now pleasant green spaces - afford some amazing views of the surrounding countryside. Come along and see what you have been missing.
